PARTY SAFE CHECKLIST

To help you party safe, the Queensland Police Service has compiled the following checklist when you are hosting a celebration.

  • Register your party at your local police station. (see Registration Form at end of this page)
  • Issue personal invitations.
  • Make decisions about alcohol and smoking and let guests know on the invitation and at the start of the party.
  • Ensure your home is suitably equipped for the number of people expected.
  • Ensure adequate adult supervision. Consider asking parents or friends to assist.
  • Supervise access to your home. In the event of uninvited guests, advise them they are not welcome and that you will contact police if they do not leave.
  • Ask all guests to show their invitation. Have an adult with a list of guest names stand at the door.
  • Encourage guests to organise their own transport to and from the party.
  • Advise your neighbors about the party beforehand.
  • Ensure all valuable items are locked away and that any out-of-bounds areas are adequately secured.

No matter how careful you are, there is a chance that there will be some trouble at your party.   You might be faced with verbal arguments between guests, people making excessive noise or even physical intimidation or violence.   As a host, you have the right to set the standard of acceptable behaviour and ensure that it is maintained at your party.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR GUESTS

Providing the right food at your party is a great way to discourage excessive alcohol consumption.

  • Ensure food and water is readily available for all guests.
  • Remember, food does not prevent people from becoming intoxicated, but eating can help slow the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the body.
  • Avoid serving salty snacks as they make people thirsty and encourage people to drink more.
  • If you are providing drinks, offer drinks that are not full strength, such as light beer.
  • Provide a variety of non-alcoholic drinks such as mocktails and fruit juices.
  • Limit the provision of spirits, champagne, wine or full strength beer.
  • Only make alcohol available from one area and have a responsible adult (who is not drinking) serve the drinks.

PARTY SAFE

For young people, going to or hosting a party is part of growing up and enjoying special occasions with friends.   Although most parties are fun for all involved, there are unfortunate occasions where disturbances such as intoxicated guests or gatecrashers ruin everyone's good time.

"Party Safe", an initiative of the Queensland Police Service, encourages partygoers to enjoy celebrations in a safe environment by registering parties with police. Registering your party with local police will provide the police with details they need to know if they are called to your party to deal with an incident.

By completing the attached registration form, it will enable police to provide an efficient policing response if required, and ensure a safer and more enjoyable party for everyone.

PARTY SAFE FOR PARENTS

Here are some ways you can make sure your child enjoys a safe party experience:

  • Speak with the party host to find out how many people will be at the party and who will be supervising, whether there will be food or alcohol served and what time the party is expected to finish.
  • Get the phone number of the house where the party is being held.
  • Drop your child off and arrange to pick them up at a certain time. This will discourage your child congregating outside before or after the party and possibly joining with others to create a nuisance.

PARTY SAFE FOR PARTY GOERS

Everyone wants to enjoy themselves at a party. There are many ways you can party safe to guarantee a good time:

  • When you are invited to a party, don't spread the invitation to other people. Discourage advertising the party on the Internet, by word of mouth or by SMS text messaging on mobile phones.
  • Try not to bring your own alcohol to the party. Your hosts will appreciate it if you take along an extra bottle of soft drink or fruit juice.
  • Set up a buddy system with one of your friends, so that you look out for each other during the party and go home together when the party is finished.
  • If you are driving to the party, appoint a designated driver and car pool with friends. The designated driver cannot drink any alcohol to make sure that you all get home safely.

PARTY SAFE FOR HOSTS

Hosting a party at home or at a local venue can be heaps of fun and you'll want to have a night your guests remember for all the right reasons. As a host, it is your responsibility to ensure your guests party safe.   If you are hosting the party, make it clear that entrance is by invitation only - this will discourage gatecrashers.   You may consider using private security for the event. They can politely ask uninvited people or unruly guests to leave.   However, they have no legal power of forcible removal unless they or a member of the organising party are directly under physical threat.

  • Remember that it is your party and you have the right to ask people to leave.
  • Make the start and finish times clear on your invitation.
  • Parental supervision or the presence of other adults will keep trouble to a minimum.
  • If you do not allow people to bring alcohol, it is easier to control the amount of alcohol consumed.
  • Advise your neighbors in advance of your upcoming function.
  • Plan what to do if a guest becomes sick or intoxicated.
  • Keep noise to a minimum. Position stereo speakers as far from neighbors as possible. Excessive noise (caused by a party, musical instrument or an appliance for electrically producing or amplifying music or other sounds) can be reported to police any time of the day or night, seven days a week.
  • Encourage parents to collect their children at the end of the party.
